Personal protective equipment (PPE) has been instrumental in the frontline battle against COVID-19. It creates a barrier between healthcare workers and patients and reduces the risk of transmission between both parties. Patients and families can also use PPE in home quarantine. When selecting PPE, we must first do a risk assessment of the potential exposure to blood, body fluids and infectious agents and the protection we require.

Hand protection

Gloves are the most common type of PPE used in the healthcare setting. They protect the user from exposure to blood, bodily fluids, secretions or excreta. They also protect the user when he or she handles contaminated equipment. Nonsterile gloves are made of latex, nitrile or vinyl. Sterile gloves are worn by surgeons and other healthcare personnel when performing invasive procedures. They should also be changed when contaminated and disposed of according to regulations. They must not be washed and reused.

Body protection

A simple apron protects healthcare providers from some types of contamination. A gown provides better protection for the arms. A fluid-resistant gown should be used if fluid penetration is expected. Healthcare providers can also wear sterile gowns when performing invasive procedures to keep both the patient and the healthcare worker safe.

Face protection

There are different types of PPEs used to protect the face. Masks should completely cover the nose and mouth, preventing fluid penetration. Goggles provide the wearer with barrier protection for the eyes and should snugly fit over and around the user's eyes or personal prescription glasses. Goggles come with antifog features that help maintain clarity of vision. Face shields cover the face, from the forehead to the chin and ear-to-ear. They can be worn to provide additional protection to the eyes, nose and mouth.

Respiratory protection

Along with masks, healthcare workers can also use respirators to protect themselves from hazardous or infectious aerosols. Respirators filter the air before it is inhaled, thus offering respiratory protection. As with other PPEs, when selecting a respirator, one should consider the nature of the exposure and the risk involved. One must undergo the required training before using them.

PPEs are intended to protect a user’s health and ensure his or her safety in all kinds of medical situations. If you are interested in purchasing PPEs, you can visit the PPE page on our site. You can also reach out to us if you require any further assistance in selecting appropriate PPE.
