A lot of things are different in the ‘new normal’. One of these is our clothing, which is now incomplete without a facemask. Masks are indispensable to our battle against the COVID-19 pandemic. Depending on where you live, you could even face heavy fines if you step out in public without wearing them. With time, however, people have made peace with masks. Some have even turned them into fashion accessories.
While it is good to possess a collection of masks, it is equally important to maintain them. An unclean or overused mask can be a breeding ground for infectious diseases. Here are three commonly used masks and how they can be maintained.
Disposable masks
Disposable masks or surgical masks are comfortable and loose-fitting. They are inexpensive and convenient. However, they must not be used for a prolonged period. Disposable masks cannot be washed. Ideally, they should be disposed after eight hours. They should be discarded earlier if they are soiled or cause discomfort.
Cloth mask
Cloth masks are extremely popular for daily use. They are available in a variety of colours and designs. They are more sustainable than disposable masks. However, cloth masks must be washed after every use. If maintained well, and washed daily, a cloth mask can last long. They can be rinsed with detergent and water. You can also use a little disinfectant.
N95 mask
N95 masks are tight-fitting and resistant to microparticles. However, they are not very popular outside healthcare settings. But if you use one, discard it after five days. During this period, they should be cleaned after every use. Soap and water are not suitable. N95 masks can be sanitised by special methods such as vaporous hydrogen peroxide, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation or moist heat incubation.
Each mask has its own protocol when it comes to maintenance. Follow all the required steps and protect your protective wear.
