The tourism industry is experiencing a long-awaited, albeit cautious, revival and hotels in regions with fewer cases of COVID- 19 are reaping the fruits of pent-up demand. But precautions against COVID-19 must continue. Here are a few ways that hotels can ensure their guests a safe experience.

Plan for emergencies

Even as hotels have opened their doors to guests, the pandemic continues to disrupt the world. Therefore, hotel administrators must be on their toes. They should work with local government and health authorities to manage potential viral outbreaks. Management must set up processes and earmark adequate resources to prepare themselves. They should create a roadmap for contact tracing and quarantine measures. Staff members should be provided with PPE, educated on COVID-19 protocol and trained on how to handle potential cases. Additionally, receptionists at the front desk must be up to date with the latest pandemic-related developments and provide guests with guidance when needed.

Sanitise rooms and public spaces

Thorough cleaning and sanitisation of rooms and public areas have become doubly important. The management must ensure that cleaning agents are chosen carefully and that cleaning frequencies are increased, particularly in areas with frequent contact. It includes surfaces like doorknobs, countertops, tables, lift buttons, staircase railings, gym equipment and restroom surfaces. Disposable wipes and sanitisers must be easily accessible in all rooms and public spaces. Special attention must be given to the cleaning staff since they are at a high risk of contracting the infection.

Ensure safe dining

Guests and staff must be encouraged to wash and sanitise their hands before contact with food. Masks must be made available. While guests will have to remove their masks while dining, ensure that they wear them while speaking with the staff. Further, staff members can be provided with additional protective gear, such as face shields or gloves if necessary. Ensure that buffet spreads are avoided. Kitchen utensils must be disinfected after use and drink dispensers, tablecloths and napkins should be regularly cleaned. Tables should be adequately spaced apart to conform to social distancing norms. You can read more about providing a safe dining experience here.

With vaccination on track, the hospitality industry has reason to be optimistic. However, COVID-appropriate practices remain essential to prevent infection and ensure that guests and staff feel at ease. Precaution will accelerate the return to normalcy.
