Since COVID-19 took the world by storm, we have learned about various topics that we never thought we would. From which test is more effective to what percentage of alcohol in hand sanitiser is enough to replace hand washing and social distancing guidelines and more. But one of the biggest things we have had to learn about is masks. From the very beginning, world leaders, medical organisations and other bodies put out advisories stating that masks are the greatest weapon we have at hand to stop the spread of this disease. Even now, with the vaccines being given, it is still a must to wear a mask.

However, even after a year, there are still many questions regarding masks, and in this blog, we will answer some of them.

How do masks work?

For diseases that spread from person to person via saliva droplets or spray, masks protect the wearer by preventing the entry of saliva droplets and particles into their nose and mouth. A medical study found that masks can substantially reduce the probability of successful transmission, even if masks only lower the exposure to viral load by approximately 50 per cent. It is recommended that everyone wear a face mask when in public while maintaining at least a six-foot distance from others.

Is there a wrong way to wear a face mask?

Your face mask should cover your chin, mouth and nose. It should be a snug fit, and you should not touch the mask's front as it may be contaminated. When putting it on or taking it off, touch only the ear loops or the ties on the back. Ensure that the same side of the masks faces outwards and always wash your hands before and after use.

How do I choose the right mask?

There are three kinds of masks to choose from – N95, surgical mask and cloth masks. N95 masks were previously exclusively used by medical practitioners during procedures. Given this specific need, they also need to be appropriately fitted to work correctly.

When it comes to everyday activities such as running errands outdoors, a surgical or cloth mask is acceptable. Both masks carry out the same functions. However, a cloth mask is only effective if it has two or more layers of washable, breathable fabric, and it can completely cover the mouth and nose while fitting snugly without any gaps. While N95 and surgical masks can be worn once or twice before disposal, cloth masks should be washed regularly after two or three uses.

Can I wear a mask while exercising?

Masks should be worn when walking, stretching or doing low-intensity yoga forms indoors. However, wearing a mask while running or doing other high-intensity exercise or physical activity will limit airflow. Carry out these outdoor activities at non-peak hours while maintaining social distance.

Is double masking helpful?

Research shows that double masking or layering a cloth mask over a disposable surgical mask can block 92 per cent of infectious particles. It is a good idea to wear double masks when you are going into a high-risk situation, such as in a densely crowded area or having a conversation at a close distance with someone. However, if you have difficulty breathing through this combination or it does not fit right, it will be better to get just one good, well-fitting mask.

Despite wearing a mask, one should still not let one’s guard down. In some cases, wearing a mask or double masking can give one a false sense of security, resulting in them spending more time outdoors or not following social distancing. We cannot become overly dependent on any one measure. It is a combination of masks, social distancing, sanitisation and other precautions that need to be used.
